NURSES AND PHYSICIANS
FAI recently
conducted a 2 Day Course for Health Care Workers and Professionals
in the Lagos State Ministry of Health’s Secondary Health
Facilities and Hospitals in the State. A World Bank assisted
project, it was titled: HIV/AIDS Programme Development, 'Expanding
Public Response'. The Centre for Management Development (CMD),
Shangisha in the hinterland of Lagos, a corporate member of the
West African Management Development Institute Network, WAMDEVIN
provided the most conducive environment for the course.

The opening ceremony which preceded the technical sessions had in
attendance the Ministry’s BIG wigs which included Directors,
Assistant Directors and an array of Medical Doctors from the
Ministry while the Special Guest of Honour was the Honorable
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan, ably represented by
another big wig in his own rights, Dr. Aderemi Desalu. Dr Desalu
is a national figure in the advocacy of HIV/AIDS as well as being
in charge as CEO of the State’s Action Committee on AIDS, SACA.
The course was
organized strictly for the Ministry’s in-house Health Care Workers
and professionals from its various General Hospitals in the State.
Some of these are: GH-Lagos, GH-Badagry, GH-Surulere, GH-Gbagada,
etc while the list of delegates was dominated by Medical
Practitioners and Nurses.
The
Facilitators, comprising of health-related professionals from
FAI’s pool of volunteers paraded 3 Medical doctors with
specialties, one of them a Clinical Scientist; an HIV/AIDS
specialist and an IT Communication specialist. Training tools
included Power Point-based presentations, one-to-many interaction,
interactive sessions, Internet-based in-class info search using
search engines, and so on.
In line with universal standards of operational Plan for HIV/AIDS
Care, Management and Treatment, providing training courses is
essential in ensuring that health professionals have the skills
and competencies to provide comprehensive care to patients and
clients. The course played right and adequately equipped delegates
with the knowledge of Universal standards relating to HIV/AIDS
Precautions; Post Exposure Prophylaxis; Care and Support for all
categories of infected persons. Techniques to overcome stigma as
a barrier to care was taught under Management while other
issues in Social, Clinical and Counseling were
thoroughly discussed with the active participation of delegates.
