U.S. Invests In Fish Production In
Badagry Community
The U.S. government’s support is a gesture aimed at reviving two of the fish ponds located in Olorunda Local Development Council of Badagry. The two are within the premises of Olorunda council. The fish-ponds, which have been lying fallow for years, caught the eyes of Dr. Rudolph Stewart, Information Officer of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, when the mission and its team visited the area to kick-start one of the many projects under the President Bush Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). To this effect, it has donated about N570, 000 to trigger the community’s interest in fish production. Speaking at an occasion where the largess was announced, Rudolph noted that the U.S. government sees fish production as a way of improving the living standard of the people in the community through improved nutrition. This he, said was still within the context of efforts that could address the effect of HIV/AIDS in the community through empowerment and nutritional provision. "We thought it is extremely important to revitalise such as an economically viable venture because it could help in empowering the people as well as provide more nutritional options for them. The project would in effect support the community effort to reduce poverty as well as provide nutrition and influence the life of People Living With HIV/AIDS in the community,’’ Rudolph said. The Chairman, Olorunda Local Development Council, Abraham Ogabi, said the grant would be judiciously used to bring the two fish-ponds to life. |
